Speed run to become a dope designer, make a chess set, trust. Whether innovating the game, making it completely unplayable, or just being a bit silly, these creatives have challenged traditional design norms, showcasing impeccable craftsmanship and fireness. Contemporary, abstract, alive, WTF – Welcome to my fifth blog about the game that consumes 90% of my phone battery.

“Yooooo Mom Noguchi made a chess set” was my reaction when I discovered this sick piece. One of my all-time favourite designers innovating one of my all-time favourite things, so awesome. Noguchi’s set stays true to his minimalist aesthetic, pieces are simple, with conceptual geometries, stripped down to their essential shapes, and at the same time pay homage to traditional forms. The rook is still square, the knight still incorporates the signature bend of the horse’s neck, and the king still has its crown. Additionally, the weight of these pieces and smoothness of their surfaces, adds a distinct tactile dimension to the gameplay. Noguchi’s set is unique because it not only innovates the board and pieces and but the entire game area. He made a whole fricken table.

Bam bam bam. Three more iconic designers infusing chess with their distinctive styles, inspirations, and narratives. On the left you have Yayoi Kusama doing her iconic yellow-black and red-white pumpkin shenanigans. In the middle you have Keith Haring doing his pop art thang, and on the right you have Zaha Hadid incorporating her famed organic architectural panache into the game.

I call these scary chess sets because they make ya boy quiver. Hella dramatic, brutalist, could maybe give you tetanus – all these sets manage to convey a sense of architectural grandeur within chess’s constrained playing field. These sets boast bold, geometric forms and a sense of solidity. They celebrate the unique tactile and physical beauty of materials like concrete, metal, and stone. The pieces exude robustness and weightiness that demand attention and respect. They are defiantly a look for some typa of person.

Screw a clock we got candles to make you move. The burning board event is an annual competition between chess players (beginners and pros) that turns a regular chess game into an unforgettable visual experience. There are 16 boards and 512 candles that are all lit at the same time, when games commence. It’s an excellent fusion of artistry and competition with hella metaphors. As the flames flicker and rise, so do players’ adrenaline. The vibrant hues of red, orange, and gold travel across the room adding new dimension to the game, heightening the sense of drama and intensity.
Skadoosh that’s my blog check out the sets below to see some more fire, inebriating, confusing, wonder-inducing chess technology.
